Sony Ericsson has been pushing its up-and-coming superphone flagship, the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1, for so long that we’re getting a little tired waiting for the Windows Mobile newcomer to get the device launched for public consumption. Last we heard, the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 was slated to go live during the second half of 2008 (with some rumors pointing to a UK launch in October-November) - a vague enough launch window to ensure that Sony Ericsson could cover its behind should they run in to development problems.

Today, it looks like Sony Ericsson was right to keep us all guessing as to exactly when the XPERIA X1 would usher in a new age of high-end smartphones. We have confirmation through Engadget that Sony Ericsson will be delaying the release of the XPERIA X1 until December 2008 or January 2009. The problem, apparently, is that Windows Mobile 6.1 is causing all sorts of problems for Sony Ericsson - which makes sense given the company’s newness to the world of Windows Mobile.

HTC will be offering their HTC Touch Pro as the HTC Fuze on AT&T, which leaves us wondering just how much of an impact the XPERIA X1 will have when it finally gets to market. The mobile space has an incredibly short attention span, and the buzz around the XPERIA X1 has all but died down at this point. Will SE have the marketing leverage to give consumers a reason to wait for their branded device when HTC will be launching essentially the same device well ahead of time (HTC Dream G1)?

<a href="http://www.koushikdutta.com/2008/07/klaxon-windows-mobile-g-sensor-enabled.html"target="_BLANK">Klaxon is a freeware alarm clock application for Windows Mobile devices based on motion detection and light sensor available in certain HTC phones. Koushik, a Windows Mobile developer, has updated the HTC Accelerometer SDK to allow access to the <a href="http://www.koushikdutta.com/2008/07/htc-light-sensor-sdk.html"target="_BLANK">light sensor API and built a sample application based on it.

Utilising this API, Klaxon turns off the alarm when it detects light in the environment. When the alarm starts, Klaxon samples the ambient light. If the light increases beyond a certain range from that ambient light, Klaxon will shut off the alarm automatically. Also, the light sensor will only turn off your alarm if the mobile phone is facing upwards.

The G-Sensor motion detection functionality includes:

+ Flip your phone over to snooze.
+ Shake your phone to turn the alarm off.

Also, you can manually configure what you want the alarm to do when you shake it, flip it, or turn on the light.

Acer’s acquisition of smartphone maker E-Ten Information Systems is set to be complete in the next few days, and Acer’s founder, Stan Shih, used the opportunity to comment on the company’s future prospects. Mr. Shih is very optimistic about Acer’s entrance into the smartphone market. He believes they [Acer] will be able to compete evenly with High Tech Computer (HTC), thanks to their worldwide network of localized channels, as well as their worldwide logistics base which the company has built up over 30 years.

Hmmm, I’ve no doubts Acer knows what they’re doing, but so far we haven’t seen a single company which could dethrone HTC. The Taiwan-based smartphone maker rules the Windows Mobile smartphone market and as far as I can tell, I don’t see any other company approaching any near their position in the next six months. Afterwards, who knows - it’s a fast pace world out there…

Adobe has announced that its Photoshop.com online service is going mobile this September. A dedicated Photoshop.com Mobile Beta client will be available as a free download and will initially support only selected Windows Mobile devices — including Motorola Q, Samsung BlackJack I, BlackJack II and the Palm Treo 700w/750.

The idea is obvious - to allow users (who may not like ShoZu, we might add) to share a photo the minute they take it through Adobe’s online photo sharing/editing service.

In case you aren’t familiar, a free Photoshop.com account gives you 5 GB of storage, while the Photoshop.com Plus account adds 15GB of storage on top of that.

The company's own website says it has.

A trip to the Sony Ericsson "official e-shop" and its Coming Soon section shows the X1 listed with a release timeframe of "January". Unless the handset's development has gone very much awry, that has to mean January 2009. It appears after phones stated as launching in October 2008.

Clicking on the X1's link reveals the phone is down as: "Expected launch: To be announced."

The X1 was announced in February this year. At the time, Sony Ericsson said it would ship in the second half of 2008.

A month later, in March, an entry on another part of the company's website was found to indicate the launch had slipped to February 2009, though Sony Ericsson quickly claimed that this was a mistake.

Recently, retailer Expansys indicated the handset would debut early in October for £590 SIM-free, and the company told Register Hardware it had received demo units - a sign of a release coming sooner rather than later.

The latest sighting on SE's site casts that conclusion into doubt.

source

If you have a thing for retro design you’re going to love this USB microphone. It features of course a retro inspired microphone. Which yes is a little more bulky than it needs to be, but it’s worth it to get the overall retro look. It uses radio-frequency identification, so you can move about the room with it as long as you’re within three meters. As you’re wandering you won’t have to worry about tripping over any wires, you can make a fool of yourself anyway though by singing into it.

It will support Windows XP, Vista and Mac OSX. It also does not require drivers for either XP or Vista. The microphone measures 80 x 80 x 160mm and has a On/Off button directly on it. Likely this microphone will probably make you want to listen to music along the lines of Fred Astaire as opposed to the more recent artists. To pick one up it will cost you $29 over on Brando.
