Hey friend, ready for a full Lenovo IdeaPad S10 review? Sorry, this ain't it, but Laptop's initial hands-on with this "sweet 10-incher" might be enough to help with any imminent purchasing decisions requiring $429 in cash. What if we sweetened the deal and told you that Lenovo's netbook also features that very same un-netbooky X4500 integrated graphics found in Intel's Centrino 2 chipset -- no lame GMA950 here, pal. And as oddball as it sounds, one reader discovered that the red-colored S10 also features an external CD-RW/DVD-ROM for the same price as the white S10 (but $10 more than the black model). Check the full hands-on text (laced with adjectives like "spacious," "lovely," and "stylish") and video (where it's dubbed a Wind and Eee PC killer) just beyond the read link and just for you buddy.

Update: A number of would-be buyers are reporting another case of Lenovo's retail ineptitude. The X4500 graphics appears to be just another misprint -- like those free SSDs and $200 14.1-inch laptops seen before. Hell, even the optical drive appears to be the stuff of data entry error. At this point it looks like we've got another GMA950 netbook on our hands which certainly makes more sense. Our advice? If you're ready to purchase then at least get on the horn with sales and confirm that bill of materials.

[Thanks, Peter and and Boning C.]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Intel’s SATA solid state drive (SSD) looks set to hit the market, which is reasonably exciting news when you consider the fact that another big player in the market is likely to drive prices the way that we want them. The Intel SSDs will come in both 1.8-inch and 2.5-inch flavors. Sizes that have been mentioned are 80GB and 128GB, but higher capacity offerings can be expected in the upcoming months.

SSD drives are said to take over storage solutions in the future, so that begs the question - will hard drives be driven to extinction? Western Digital doesn't think so as they are busy working on a new 20,000 rpm Raptor hard drive. Other than the rpm value, nothing else is known about this hush-hush project, although some sources from Taiwan have disclosed that it will be a 2.5" hard drive that comes in a custom-built 3.5" housing and will run as silent as a nuclear submarine. I jest, but it will probably be much quieter compared to a standard hard drive, losing out only to SSDs and other flash memory. This is made possible thanks to a modified spindle housing that does not vibrate at high speeds.

The 1.8-inch X-18M and 2.5-inch X-25M drives will be targeted at laptops and MIDs and come in 80GB and 160GB sizes using MLC tech, while the 32GB and 64GB SLC-based X-25E is aimed at servers and will be out in 90 days. Intel hasn't locked down pricing, but the M-series drives should cost about $8/GB, which would put the 160GB unit at a whopping $1,280 and the 80GB at $640. We're hoping those estimates are skewed a little high -- and Intel says there might be a cheaper 40GB unit on the way as well. We'll see in a month, we suppose.

[Via Electronista]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Now we've gotten our hands on the full (internal) 910 web documentation. Along with scoping shots from every angle, we've learned that the 910 will support SSDs up to 16GB and has what looks to be very moddable internals (large Phillips-head screws hold that SSD in place). The system will go on sale in just a few days—August 22nd our source says—but we still don't know whether or not that $299 starting price is just a myth. Just in case the gallery sizing is screwy, here's the full spec sheet all bigified:

Now for that little matter of pricing...

Merely days later, it's already talking about the next best thing. Said firm, along with Mosaid, is preparing for a third-generation of the controller for the SATA 3 interface, which will provide a mind-boggling 600MB/sec. Unfortunately, no other details were provided, but just in case you were terrified that the internal drive you purchase in 2013 wouldn't transfer files any faster than the one you're using now, at least you've one less worry on your mind.

[Thanks, Johnny]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

In a weirdly casual move, Lenovo has let details slip on the next iteration of its MacBook Air-challenging laptop -- the ThinkPad X300 -- unsurprisingly dubbed the X301. The new device ups the processor ante by adding the as-yet-unreleased Intel Core 2 Duo ULV (ultra low voltage) U9300 (1.2GHz) and U9400 (1.4GHz), both with a 6MB L2 cache and 1066MHz FSB. Additionally, the X301 will support up to 2GB of DDR3 RAM, and Lenovo will offer SSDs of the 80GB or 128GB variety, as opposed to the last generation's 64GB option. A new DisplayPort jack is included, along with boosted mobile broadband quality, GPS, and plans for a WiMAX version later this year. The laptops start at $2,599 and will be available August 26th, though the 128GB option doesn't show up until September. Full PR after the break.
Continue reading Lenovo slips out the new ThinkPad X301: new CPUs, 128GB SSD, still thin as hell

Permalink | Email this | Comments

OCZ has announced brand new Core Series V2 SSDs. With its new architecture, the V2 will be available in up to a massive 250GB capacity and delivers enhanced speeds of up to 170 MB/s read and 98 MB/s write. The SSDs are also available in 30GB, 60GB, 120GB. Because SSD drives feature no moving parts, the Core Series V2 will keep your laptop or desktop environment cool and quiet and provide superior shock resistance. Core V2 SSDs have an amazing 1.5 million hour mean time before failure (MTBF). All Core Series SSD drives come backed a two year warranty. SSD is an excelent solution to store critical data, preferably than recovering 250 GB from a crash standard HDD which will be slow and painful, if at all possible. Although OCZ has stated that their price will be 50% of competitors’, currently price is TBD.
