But many others point to AT&T's cellular network.

Whatever the source of the problems, AT&T's rivals, long irritated by all the attention the iPhone has received, are on the attack and happy to exploit the discontent.

A Verizon executive sent an e-mail to Wall Street analysts last week: "So much for a 'new' way of doing business at the old AT&T -- your father's phone company."

Get more at the New York Times here.

Late summer seems to be the perfect time for fun and innovative concept phones, but this was a bit unexpected.

At the 2008 Good Design Expo PHS mobile provider Willcom showed off their concept Kuma Phone (Bear Phone), a stuffed bear that holds a SIM card and can actually be used for making and receiving phone calls by holding it up to your ears.

To demonstrate, visitors could use Willcom’s new Nico.Marble candy-themed phone, also aimed at women wanting more cuteness and ease than strong functionality.

The bear seems a bit silly and, yes, “Japanese” by cuteness standards, but the idea is fun and was adored by the expo crowd. You can save up to four speed dial numbers in the bear, one in each paw, which are activated by pinching internal sensors. It vibrates and makes custom noises for incoming calls, which can be answered and finished by pressing the tail.

In a pamphlet, the Kuma Phone was priced at about $500, which seems a bit steep, so we’ll see what happens if/when this little bear makes it to market.

Shenzhen, China, 29 August 2008] Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. ("Huawei"), a leader in providing next generation telecommunications network solutions for operators around the world, today announced...

[Shenzhen, China, 29 August 2008] Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. ("Huawei"), a leader in providing next generation telecommunications network solutions for operators around the world, today announced Huawei won 17 new commercial WiMAX 16e contracts in the first half of 2008, more than the total number of contracts signed for the whole of 2007. To date Huawei has secured 29 WiMAX 16e commercial contracts and accumulated over 35 trials which according to IDC, means the company is the joint market-leader in WiMAX 16e market share.

"Huawei is the only solution provider to rank in the 'Top 3' across mobile, fixed network and IP segments according to industry analyst firms, Dittberner, Ovum-RHK and Gartner" said Mr. Zhao Ming, President of Huawei' s WiMAX product line. "Huawei has been developing these technologies for over 10 years and is committed to integrating optimal resources to provide our customers with the most competitive and diversified WiMAX solutions."

WiMAX is favored by many operators because of its numerous advantages such as flexible deployment, mobility and high-access speed. Compared to traditional mobile networking, WiMAX uses end-to-end IP networking which guarantees QoS, security, wireless network planning, and the provision of broadband services.

Huawei' s WiMAX solutions use Huawei' s 4th generation Base Transceiver Station (BTS) platform, which features high-capability, multi-standard integration and 'Green' technologies to provide operators with the means to undergo smooth network evolution in the future while maximizing their Return on Investment (ROI).

During the initial stage of network deployment, operators are concerned with maximizing their investment, rapidly deploying services and simplifying operations and management. Huawei' s compact WiMAX solution addresses these issues by integrating multiple network elements including ASN-Gateway, Operations and Maintenance System, Authentication, Authorization and Accounting, Domain Name Server, and Business & Operation Support System, and helping operators to rapidly deploy an economical network while reducing their Operating Expense (OPEX) by 30%. In early 2008, Huawei released its first CPE and USB dongle terminal satisfying Wave2 requirements providing even greater choice for operators wishing to deploy WiMAX services.

"We believe establishing and maintaining a cohesive ecosystem is the key to the development of WiMAX industry. To this end, Huawei is committed to building an open WiMAX ecosystem and promoting the healthy development of WiMAX industry chain," said Mr. Zhao Ming," The global wireless broadband market has leapt into a phase of rapid development. Huawei' s end-to-end WiMAX solutions, are able to address any operator' s WiMAX needs."

As a core member of the IEEE802.16 and WiMAX Forum, Huawei contributes to many joint industry proposals. Huawei is also committed to promoting interoperability testing of chips, terminals and equipment. With the company' s completion of its second WiMAX IOT (interoperability test) in Hong Kong in April 2008, Huawei has now performed IOT with products from manufacturers including Runcom, SEQUANS, GCT, ZyXEL, SEWON and ASUS.

Fruit flies are magnificent flying machines, and here’s a high-speed video to prove it. Not only can the little buggers react to your flyswatting attacks within 100 thousandths of a second, their micro-brains are smart enough to plan an escape route ahead of time.

This video is fascinating. We’ve been practicing catching flies with our bare hands around here, and the advice of anticipating the fly’s direction of escape and sneaking up behind the varmint are both spot-on.

Even when resting, a fly’s brain is capable of 100 billion computations per second, pretty quick until you consider that the fastest supercomputers can now surpass 1 quadrillion computations per second.

Someone sound off the geek alert: Star Wars fanatic Daniel Deutsch has assembled a replica of the Landspeeder -- and he claims it's perfectly drivable.

Mind you, it's not actually as fast as the actual Landspeeder in Star Wars; Deutsch says the fiberglass vehicle runs on electricity at a max speed of 25MPH. It allegedly can travel several miles on a single battery charge.

Cool! It'd be even cooler if Deutsch devoted his life to engineering electric cars that greatly benefit society rather than worshipping a stale franchise.

Check out Deutsch's site for more pics and even a video.
