We’ve known the Omnia has been coming for some time - we’ve even seen the Ads in the sunday newspaper today - but what is the total cost of all that marketing and advertising in the UK? Well, according to Mobile News, we now have an answer……

….. and the answer is nearly £5m!

The Omnia has come at somewhat an awkward time, in so much as the established competition (a certain Apple device) is selling like the proverbial ‘hotcakes’, and other newcomers such as the Nokia N96, and Sony Ericsson Xperia are looming on the horizon.

So it would appear Samsung is going to address this by dumping a ton of cash in to making sure that everyone and his mate knows about this device! Oh, and the global marketing campaign is going to hit around £24m, just in case you were wondering.

In the UK at least, Samsung has qualified their spend to say it covers advertising in the press, online, and also outdoor (in ‘the street’ so to speak), but no TV Ads. So I think once it is done, we are all going to be pretty aware of this touch-based smartphone….

I’ve still got to wonder though - does that UI layer that Samsung have added to WinMo really make it competitive with the iPhone’s native UI? Best get myself down the local mobile shop and find out!!

Mr. Jalopy is a Do-it-yourself guru that can fix just about anything from electronic devices to old automobiles. He believes in not only fixing things but improving them as well. Mr Jalopy also thinks that instead of complaining about something, you should do something about. Recently he noticed the rapid closing of drive in movie theaters in his area. He said, “Rather than moan and groan about the death of the drive-in movie theatre, I decided to build my own.” What he did was build his own digital projector out of a light bulb, old bookshelves, and some trashed electrical parts. He mounted his projector onto a kitchen table he found one day on the side of the road. Now every time he wants the joy of an outdoor movie, he mounts the projector, with table, onto the back of an adult sized tricycle and pedals towards the nearest building wall. He is also known for building “The world’s biggest iPod” by combining a standard iPod with a depression-era family radio and a 1970s stereo.

The Jetboil Personal Cooking System (PCS) has sparked a revolution in outdoor cooking. Capable of boiling two cups in two minutes at 75-80% efficiency, the PCS is twice as fast and uses half as much fuel as conventional stoves. The PCS boils up to 50 cups (12 liters) of water from only one isobutane/propane micro-canister. Such outstanding performance results from the FluxRing heat exchanger, which captures and focuses the burner’s heat instead of the heat being lost to the ambient air. Well suited to quickly heating water, the Jetboil can be used to make hot beverages, noodles, pasta, dehydrated hiking meals, soups and, of course, a nice cup of coffee (using the optional Coffee Press accessory).

Well, this is neat especially for those who love adventuring in the great outdoors, and starting a fire can be quite a hassle. It also makes for the perfect device if you want instant hot water (although there is the initial 2 minute wait), allowing to brew your own coffee almost instantaneously.

We didn't give a single one of these speakers any kind of field test, and we're not going to pretend for a second that that matters. Thankfully, you and I are not the folks who have to view these speakers as anything more than absolutely beautiful monuments to silly rich audio fetishists. So let's ogle: take the Sonnance "Threewheeler" donught-y Bluetooth outdoor speaker shown above as only the beginning. It costs $21,000.

Garden lighting is nothing new or exciting, neither are splash proof speakers.  However, the combination of the two makes outdoor entertaining a bit more convenient.  It is of course only splash proof, so you can’t douse the poor speakers in water and still expect them to work.  That also means it might not be the best to leave them outside while it’s really pouring.  Which does make them a little inconvenient, but it does still have some redeeming factors.

It does also have a flat base, so you could sit it underneath your porch for storage and use.  After all a patio is where you’re likely to spend more of your time anyway, you might as well have it right there with you.  Then when it gets dark out you have a nice glow to go with it.  They will reach up to 240ft and you can buy a second speaker and play them as a set or just one on its own.  These will work with MP3 players, DVD players, TVs, all the usual gadgets.  The speaker will cost you £84.95 or about $150 from BoyStuff.co.uk.
