As the clock continues to tick for brave Phoenix so far away on Mars, the discoveries keep on rolling: this time, that snow falls on Mars. A laser instrument called for pulsing the atmosphere and observing what gets bounced back detected Martian flurries at altitudes of 4km in the clouds. The snow is vaporizing before hitting the ground, but the discovery lends some crucial insight into the Martian water cycle. As did another juicy finding dug up from the soil.

The latest sample from the extended surface digs to hit Phoenix's Easybake detected the presence of calcium carbonate—a mineral found in chalk and clay that tends to only exist in soil after interactions with liquid water. Phoenix has already tasted water ice from its landing point on the North Pole, but the carbonate is an important find for suggesting more watery interactions in the past.

The sun is slowly setting on Phoenix as winter sets in—its solar panels output less juice every day. But before going cold completely, the team hopes to fire up a microphone (the guy has everything) to take a listen for whatever might be out there.

Above, you see two of McDonald's Finest. On the right is a Big Mac, freshly made in 2008. On the left, a rather more vintage specimen, embalmed at the factory with the usual edible preservatives to keep it juicy and tender right up until you gobble it down. But nobody ate it, and it still looks as fresh as it did the day it was made, twelve years ago.

In 1996, the iPod was but an itch in Steve Jobs' loin. When the first of the iconic white bricks rolled off the line, this burger was already five years old. If it was human, it would have started school already. At my current iPod burn rate of one every two years, this mummified pattie would outlast six of them, and it's still going strong.

The burger has been kept by nutrition teacher Karen Hanrahan in order to rather effectively demonstrate the perils of technology when brought to fast food (see, there is a gadget angle in this story):

People always ask me - what did you do to preserve it?

Nothing - it preserved itself.

Ladies, Gentleman, and children alike - this is a chemical food. There is absolutely no nutrition here.

If Hanrahan ever needs a little extra cash, she could sell this right into the collectors market: She even kept the original 1990s packaging.
This hack uses CHDK -- the free firmware enhancement for Canon PowerShot cameras -- and LiveView to capture video to the camera's CF Card. There are still a few issues: LiveView shuts down after a period of inactivity, video can't be transfered via USB, and unlike your $79 consumer grade camera, the EOS 40D won't record audio. But what's a little challenge in the face of a good camera mod? There's no word on file format, frame rate or resolution (though the camera's display weighs in at 320 x 240), but there are lots of other juicy details available once you hit the read link. And be sure to catch the video after the break.

Reportedly, the exec made clear at the show that a 60-megapixel version of the camera (H3DII-60) would be made available in April of 2009, and while it would demand a £4,000 ($7,393) premium over the £14,750 ($27,261) H3DII-50, that increase would pay for a sensor that provides 94% full-frame coverage. It's okay, your D40 is still bombastic in its own right.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Android's built-in Amazon MP3 service, offering six million tracks dipped in acid and cleansed of DRM, is certainly a juicy plum, but listening to those tracks on the first HTC G1 on your cans isn't going to be easy: there's no standard 3.5mm jack. You'll have to buy an adapter.

This isn't much of a surprise. HTC's Touch series also eschews the standard, opting instead for an ExtUSB connector that ties microphone, power and headphones into one. You won't be totally out-in-the-cold: HTC will bundle the G1 with a built-in headset, probably of the usual crap bundled-in aural ergonomic design: a set to jaggedly tear at your penichrondiums and which must be thumb pressed down to the cochlea to prevent plopping out.

That's disappointing and a bit puzzling: the G1 is going head-to-head with the iPhone, so you'd think they'd have learned from the iPhone's mistake of a recessed 3.5mm jack. Instead, HTC's topped it, forcing most people who want to listen to music on their phone to waggle around a doofy dongle. That may seem like a small nitpick, but for people who want a phone that is as much a music player as anything else, another peripheral to lug around is a big tick in the "con" column.

It's one thing to appear on a website before being officially outed. It's another to have a web portal designed specifically for a handset. On the eve of its official debut in the Big Apple, T-Mobile has launched the definitive G1 website, complete with a G1 logo, the time and date of tomorrow's press event, a few tabs sure to be chock full of juicy details just as soon as said event closes, and most importantly, a pre-order button (of sorts) in order to sign up for what we can only fathom to be a notification of availability. 10:30AM tomorrow morning -- we'll be there, you'll be there.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Amazon's always looking for creative new ways to distribute digital media -- and in light of its recently-launched Video On Demand service and the decent head of steam AmazonMP3 has managed to build, it'd probably just love to shoehorn its way onto a high-profile mobile device right about now. VentureBeat is reporting a juicy rumor of a G1 that made an appearance somewhere in San Fran's seedy underbelly over the weekend bearing an Amazon music and video app designed to dole out media for cash, suggesting that Android's first commercial hardware might come out of the gate ready not just to lock horns with the iPhone's WiFi App Store, but also to straight-up beat it by throwing in movie and TV download capability. Then again, no 3G network -- particularly one with as small of a footprint as T-Mobile's -- is mighty enough to effectively do feature-length movie downloads over the aether, so it remains to be seen exactly how this would all play out. Get a good night's sleep this evening, folks, because if everything goes according to plan, we'll have some solid answers in just a few short hours.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

With under a week to go before the HTC Dream is officially unveiled in the Big Apple, the Wall Street Journal has given us something juicy to gnaw on for the time being: a price. Unsurprisingly positioned to compete directly with the iPhone 3G, the Android-powered HTC Dream / G1 will go for a cool $199 (with 2-year contract, obviously) when it launches on T-Mobile, though there's no word yet on what it'll run sans subsidization. So, how do you like dem Apples?

[Via Fortune]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
