Now they [Sistema] along with their newly acquired company, Shyam Telecom, became the first new telecom operator to get pan-India start-up spectrum to offer mobile services.

India’s Communication and IT Minister A Raja has signed the file for allotting CDMA spectrum to Shyam Telecom for 21 circles except Rajasthan where the company is already offering services under the Oasis brand.

Shyam-Sistema has started rolling out network in various parts of the country and is hoping to start the services soon. They will be the third private CDMA-based pan-India operator apart from Anil Ambani’s Rcom and Tata Teleservices.

Other new telecom operators like Datacom, Unitech, Loop Telecom and Swan Telecom got the GSM frequencies in six circles and the government is looking at the availability of spectrum in other circles, too.

The good (or not so good) folks at Northrop Grunman believe that they will be able to make good on their promise of delivering weapons grade lasers by the end of this year. This comes after...

The good (or not so good) folks at Northrop Grunman believe that they will be able to make good on their promise of delivering weapons grade lasers by the end of this year. This comes after developments in the Joint High-Powered Solid State Laser (JHPSSL) project have started to bear fruit, 100 kilowatts of the stuff.

Defense contractor Northrop Grumman is promising the Pentagon that it’ll have weapons-grade electric lasers by the end of 2008. Which means honest-to-goodness energy weapons might actually become a military reality, after decades of fruitless searching.

According to Northrop Grunman spokesperson Bob Bishop for Defense Daily:

“We are completely confident we will meet the 100 kW of power level and associated beam quality and runtime requirements of the JHPSSL Phase 3 program by the end of December, 2008.

At the moment, they can maintain a 30kW beam for more than five minutes continuously and more than 40 minutes in total. While 30kW is a far cry from 100kW, one needs to remember that this is but one part of an eight link chain. The lasers will be combined to produce a more powerful system, so 30kW is a massive step in the right direction.
Following on confirmed reports that had the ballyhooed and highly-anticipated Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 Windows Mobile smartphone delayed until possibly January of next year, Sony Ericsson has come out...

Following on “confirmed” reports that had the ballyhooed and highly-anticipated Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 Windows Mobile smartphone delayed until possibly January of next year, Sony Ericsson has come out with a statement pointing towards a Q4 2008 delivery window for the XPERIA X1.

The company is rebuffing any claims that the next-generation high-end flagship will be pushed back until 2009. The Windows Mobile-powered Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 has been the talk of the town for too long, so it’s good to see Sony Ericsson essentially guaranteeing that we’ll be putting hands on the superphone before year’s end.

“There is absolutely no delay. The product is on track,” Sony Ericsson spokeswoman Merran Wrigley said. “We have said it will roll out in Q4 and we are on target to do that.”

HTC is responsible for the hardware behind the Swedish-Japanese joint venture’s latest flagship, which bodes well for Sony Ericsson’s fortunes. HTC turns anything they touch in to gold (Diamonds?) recently, and the XPERIA X1 should be no exception. Windows Mobile baubles aside, Sony Ericsson would do well to get their XPERIA X1 to market sooner rather than later. Attention spans in the mobile world are quite short.

Until that Q4 launch window rolls around, enjoy the new promotional vid of the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1.

[Ed's Note: Today's review of the Peek email device is written by Wired.com copy chief Tony Long, who in addition to ensuring every sentence posted on Wired is clean, correct, and contains a witty headline, also chimes in on the state of technology and culture as the Luddite.]

Sometimes, Freud said, a cigar is just a cigar. In an industry that offers an endless supply of tarted-up gadgetry as phallic substitutes for Freud's cigar, the Peek handheld represents a refreshing, if puzzling, exception to the rule that says, the more crap you can cram into a small device, the better.

The Peek, which bears more than a passing resemblance to the classic calculator, was built to send and receive e-mail. That's it. It doesn't do anything else. Nothing. No phone. No internet access. No instant messaging. No camera. No music player. Zilch. Nada. Nichts. Just e-mail. It's about as stripped down a tech device as exists — or has ever existed.

That's why, when the editors of the Gadget Lab were looking for someone to review this oddity, they settled on the lowest-tech editor in the joint — me. It makes sense, seeing as how this device will have little appeal to people who equate being connected in every way possible with their quality of life. That certainly isn't me.

That said, the only real advantage to owning a Peek is that you can check your e-mail away from a computer. The thing is, of course, is that a lot of other devices already do that, while giving you all the other stuff to boot. Because the Peek is limited to a basic function, using it is a breeze. Even without operating instructions, this Cro-Magnon was able to figure out how it worked with only a minor assist from the Gadget Lab. ("Push the scroll wheel in, Tony.")

Bottom line: If you're a Luddite at heart but still have reason to fiddle with e-mail from time to time, or if you believe that simplicity in all things is the key to life, the Peek is for you. If dining a la carte at the tech buffet is not your idea of a square meal, then skip it. —Tony Long

WIRED Not much, really, except that the Peek does exactly what it's meant to do, and does it well. Among my kind, that's Wired enough. It's also slim, lightweight and portable, which is nice, albeit somewhat unnecessary since people like myself don't have pockets brimming ith gadgets .

TIRED The Peek does e-mail, period, so no matter how efficient it may be, it lacks a lot of stuff that the modern consumer has come to expect from devices of this size and shape. It could also use a stylus to make navigating the tiny keyboard less of a chore.

Group D IKSIS Corporation and Nokia announced the launch of a joint project to change the concept of a network of shops in accordance with European standards.

The new concept Nokia and D IKSIS involves significant changes in the domestic processing shops. It is based on the principles of segmentation range, Nokia Corporation developed during recent research buying preferences in Europe. Buyers today rather difficult to understand in a variety of phones sold. And new design showcases, developed by Nokia and D IKSIS, each designed to help sort out the range and in their own preferences, compared to similar functionality and style phone models and make their right choices.

At the core of the concept is a clear separation of all phones on the functional characteristics into 4 categories: "Multimedia", "Classics", "Style" and "Business". Telephones, which are characterized by a qualitatively realized music and video functions, fall into the category of "Multimedia". In the category of "Classic" model is composed of the most simple to use. The name "Style" speaks for itself - here are image vehicles made in an unusual design and form factor. Finally, the category "Business" includes devices with advanced technical specifications, as a rule, these smart phones and communicators.

It is this concept of separation of all phones on the functional characteristics and becomes the basis of new stores. Each of these categories corresponds to its own colours. Thus, the buyer must only determine their own preferences and expectations (do a music phone, smartphone or just beautiful "accessory") and has already choose from those models which they correspond.

Two updated store D IKSIS already working in Moscow on the streets Taganskaya, 1 (TK "Star") and Nizhny Novgorod, 2 / 1 (TK "Nizhny Novgorod"). In future plans partner companies - to convert in accordance with the concept of a network of 100 stores until mid-October and another 200 - before the end of the year. Re-D IKSIS affect stores located in all federal districts of Russia. An estimated Nokia and IKSIS D, a new concept stores would improve the effectiveness of outlets and increase sales by 14% in physical terms and by 12% in cash.

[Shenzhen, China, 29 August 2008] Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. ("Huawei"), a leader in providing next generation telecommunications network solutions for operators around the world, today announced Huawei won 17 new commercial WiMAX 16e contracts in the first half of 2008, more than the total number of contracts signed for the whole of 2007. To date Huawei has secured 29 WiMAX 16e commercial contracts and accumulated over 35 trials which according to IDC, means the company is the joint market-leader in WiMAX 16e market share.

"Huawei is the only solution provider to rank in the 'Top 3' across mobile, fixed network and IP segments according to industry analyst firms, Dittberner, Ovum-RHK and Gartner" said Mr. Zhao Ming, President of Huawei' s WiMAX product line. "Huawei has been developing these technologies for over 10 years and is committed to integrating optimal resources to provide our customers with the most competitive and diversified WiMAX solutions."

WiMAX is favored by many operators because of its numerous advantages such as flexible deployment, mobility and high-access speed. Compared to traditional mobile networking, WiMAX uses end-to-end IP networking which guarantees QoS, security, wireless network planning, and the provision of broadband services.

Huawei' s WiMAX solutions use Huawei' s 4th generation Base Transceiver Station (BTS) platform, which features high-capability, multi-standard integration and 'Green' technologies to provide operators with the means to undergo smooth network evolution in the future while maximizing their Return on Investment (ROI).

During the initial stage of network deployment, operators are concerned with maximizing their investment, rapidly deploying services and simplifying operations and management. Huawei' s compact WiMAX solution addresses these issues by integrating multiple network elements including ASN-Gateway, Operations and Maintenance System, Authentication, Authorization and Accounting, Domain Name Server, and Business & Operation Support System, and helping operators to rapidly deploy an economical network while reducing their Operating Expense (OPEX) by 30%. In early 2008, Huawei released its first CPE and USB dongle terminal satisfying Wave2 requirements providing even greater choice for operators wishing to deploy WiMAX services.

"We believe establishing and maintaining a cohesive ecosystem is the key to the development of WiMAX industry. To this end, Huawei is committed to building an open WiMAX ecosystem and promoting the healthy development of WiMAX industry chain," said Mr. Zhao Ming," The global wireless broadband market has leapt into a phase of rapid development. Huawei' s end-to-end WiMAX solutions, are able to address any operator' s WiMAX needs."

As a core member of the IEEE802.16 and WiMAX Forum, Huawei contributes to many joint industry proposals. Huawei is also committed to promoting interoperability testing of chips, terminals and equipment. With the company' s completion of its second WiMAX IOT (interoperability test) in Hong Kong in April 2008, Huawei has now performed IOT with products from manufacturers including Runcom, SEQUANS, GCT, ZyXEL, SEWON and ASUS.
