Asus has decided to introduce their latest high-end gaming notebook at CES 2009. Known as the ASUS W90, the laptop provides a 18.4- or 17-inch display, depending on model with the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4870 X2 or HD 3850 X2 dual graphics, or a single NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GS GPU, and the Intel Core 2 Duo processor. The W90 also uses Intel X38 chipset and has three SO-DIMM slots for up to 6GB of DDR2 memory. Other kewl features include up to 1 terabyte of hard drive storage space using two HDDs, a DVD burner or Blu-ray optical drive, six built-in Altec Lansing surround sound speakers, an optional TV tuner, the AI Touch Media, a 2MP webcam, 802.11 Draft N wireless, Bluetooth, Gigabit Ethernet LAN, and a 56k modem. Its Turbo Gear function allows users to overclock the machine by “up to 25%”. There are also HDMI and VGA outputs, four USBs, an ExpressCard slot, Firewire, and an 8-in-1 media card reader. The Asus W90 runs on Microsoft Windows Vista 64-bit OS.

Dell’s new Studio XPS laptops have arrived on the company’s store without even a press release. The 1340 is obviously the Studio XPS 13 incher, while the 1640 is the 16-inch version of the leather accented system. Both machines are lookers, and share the same $1,199 pricepoint, with Core 2 Duo processors and the typical options.

The base model of the 1340 includes a P8400 processor, Vista Home Premium, a 13.3-inch WXGA LCD, 2 megapixel webcam, 4GB of DDR3 SDRAM, 320GB 7200rpm SATA drive, slot-loading DVD burner and NVIDIA GeForce 9400M G graphics. The 1640 is similar, but with ATI Mobility RADEON M86XT graphics.

They seem pretty dangerously overpriced if you ask me. Sure, they look sweet, but I can think of several happy alternatives for less.

Among the embarrassment of riches that CES has been for Sammy fans thus far, we have several new items available for your consideration. The SyncMaster 930ND is a 19-inch PC-over-IP-enabled display developed with Teradici Corporation that sports four USB connectors, 2-way audio, and DVI-out for a secondary display. For gamers, the 22-inch 2233RZ is an NVIDIA GeForce 3D Vision-compatible monitor, due to hit the streets in April for an MSRP of $349. And rounding out the collection, the company has added two more DisplayLink monitors to the mix: the SyncMaster D190SU (19-inch) and D220SU (22-inch). No word on a release date or price for this one, but you'll know as soon as we do.

[CES 2009] I really like what Asus has done with its Bamboo Series notebook - place it on a wooden floor and chances are pretty good you would actually have it blend into the background. This 12" Bamboo Series is Asus' part in helping create sustainable merchandise, featuring LED backlight for lower power consumption and Asus' Super Hybrid Engine Technology that makes it more efficient thanks to intelligent power allocation. Other features of the Bamboo Series notebook include :-

Spare a thought for NVIDIA's GeForce 9M series of laptop GPUs, just announced this past summer and already being put to pasture by the newly announced G100M series. The first trio of members for the club are the G105M, G110M, and GT 130M. The G105M is intended to replace the 9200M GE and scores a 2177 in 3DMark Vantage compared to 1391 for the old one -- a tidy 56 percent boost. Meanwhile the G110M supersedes the 9300M GS, scoring 2481 and beating its predecessor by 35 percent, and the GT 130M beats the old 9600M GT's score by 17 percent. The side panels are actually a cool translucent smoke finish, and the blue LED lighting might be the first classy gaming PC light kit we've ever seen. HP was demoing the Firebird with Left 4 Dead and Crysis, and the gamers on hand seemed pretty pleased -- we'll have see how the $1,799 machine's 2.83GHz Core 2 Quad and dual NVIDIA GeForce 9800S graphics cards benchmark out when it's released on February 1st.

We’ve shown NVIDIA’s shutter glasses to you during NVISION, but this time, the product is here. The tech works well and games like Age of Empire and World of Warcraft are “jumping out” of the display but the cool thing is in the business model.

For those not familiar with the stereo glasses market, you should know that many companies charge not only for the glasses, but also for the stereo driver for games, on a “per-game” basis (around $8-$10). Yes, you heard me, it’s insane! With NVIDIA, you get the glasses for $199 and you can download a driver that works with hundreds of games, and all the following updates are free. I think that the media has largely passed on this fact, which is really the meat of this product – from the buyer’s perspective.

This will only work with recent TVs, so check the NVIDIA website to see what’s compatible. In terms of quality, this is pretty much top of the line, for a stereo consumer product, but don’t expect miracles either, if you have tested stereo before, it’s not all that different. If you have not, you should at least try.

Aimed squarely at gamers, Nvidia’s new GeForce 3D Vision glasses give you more of a 3D experience playing games. Nvidia says it has tested this with over 350 titles and game developers don’t need to do anything special to have this technology work with their game.

We tried them out and while I wouldn’t say that this was a true 3D experience, it certainly gave a great deal of depth to the picture and gameplay and was still pretty cool. The glasses were comfortable and not heavy.

The good news is that you’ll have something to use these with since Left 4 Dead, WoW: WotLK and several other games are already compatible. More are expected to follow soon.

CES had a demo and so far we haven’t heard about any headaches or other strange side-effects so it’s all good and completely stereocopic 3D. The price? $399 for the display and $199 for this set when it’s available in the next few days. But I have one question for you. Just how close do you really want to get to those zombies?

What’s great is, no red and blue like the old nerd 3D glasses and they don’t look half bad.
