By Evan Ackerman

I guess I must have found the Greener Gadgets section of CES, because Solio and PowerFilm were right next to each other. How convenient. Solio’s new Mono is basically just one single leaf of their hybrid charger that I reviewed back in April. So it works exactly the same way, with an onboard battery charged by the sun or a wall jack (or car or USB port) depending on how green you’re feeling and how much time you’ve got. A set of adapters gets power from the Solio into your device. Solio suggests that you use the Mono as an emergency power supply (it’s got enough power to fully charge the average cell phone once), and you can buy a little LED flashlight that plugs right into it, too.

The Solio Mono is $60, and the light tip is $20, available now online and at places like REI.

By Evan Ackerman

PowerFilm makes a wide array of rollable and foldable solar panels that are easy to take with you to power your gadgets when you’re in the middle of nowhere communing with nature. Their newest chargers are designed specifically to charge AA batteries, and one of them even comes with an integrated USB charging port. You can charge 4 AA batteries at up to 0.4 amps in direct sunlight, or plug your USB stuff in directly, or charge via USB using the batteries. The PowerFilm USB AA solar charger weighs under 5 ounces and will retail for about $100 “shortly.” The version that charges just 4 AAs will cost about $80.

PowerFilm also has products designed for, shall we say, more power intensive consumers. Like the military, for example, or emergency services. The Solar Quad is a 10 foot square, 190 watt foldable panel array that can put out 12 amps at over 15 volts, which is a lot of juice from a bunch of tiny little photons. The big size comes with a big pricetag, of course: $2000.

This time the dock is built into an accent lamp. This new luminescent design features 6W total speaker output, is compatible with iPod and all other auxiliary audio sources.

The iLamp comes in a variety of colors. It’s a great way to have your gadgets blend in with the design of your home, while your dock is a bit more functional. Apparently these lamps make pretty music notes swirl around it like a mini tornado.

These should be popular.

The Anybot telepresence robot is a videophone with a bit of a difference. The screen and phone are incorporated into a 2 wheeled human sized robot.

Like a Segwat the Anybot uses the same sort of technology to always remain upright even when bending (I’m guessing this is so it can look down on your minions even when you’re away from the office).

It has a top speed of 6 MPH, a built in laser pointer (maybe a gun in later versions), 2 cameras and full duplex audio. It’s a cool idea but somewhat big brotherish IMO.

Unrelated candid photo aside... it's no lie: if you've managed to load Android onto your device, no matter how lame it may seem, you're probably a good looking person. Not only that, but you might've built Touch Revolution's NIMBLe, which is a billed as a Home Touch Phone, but runs the Android OS and holds a full 7-inch touchscreen. The most basic functionality is that of a speakerphone, but obviously Android -- along with the built-in WiFi, Bluetooth and Ethernet connectivity -- opens this up to so much more functionality. Touch Revolution is actually dabbling in all sorts of hardware and software configurations, building a "Touch Device Development Platform" for farming out to companies for all sorts of purposes. Current builds include 600MHz StrongARM or greater processors, 128MB of RAM, 512MB of flash memory, SD card slots, 4.3-inch, 7-inch or 10-inch LCDs, 2 megapixel cameras and up to 800 x 480 resolutions. The unit we played with seemed responsive and only a little bit pointless, and we look forward to seeing this sort of thing hit the market -- we know MC Hammer would agree. Action video is after the break.

Gallery: NIMBLe is MC Hammer-approved, brings Android to even the most boring of countertops

Continue reading NIMBLe is MC Hammer-approved, brings Android to even the most boring of countertops

Filed under: Misc. It was just a short year ago that we went to Fulton Innovation's tiny booth at CES and failed to get a working wireless power demo, but a lot's happened since then -- the company is at CES 2009 in force, with a much larger, swanker booth, partners like Energizer and Motorola demoing working products, and tons of working real-world examples of the tech in action. We were particularly taken with the modded Dish DVR that automatically turned itself on and off when the remote was placed on top of it to charge up -- oh, and the remote featured super-capacitors instead of batteries that charge fully in 10 seconds. There were also a ton of cell phones (including a modded iPhone, of course), new cooking demos featuring a blender, and a super cool Leggett & Pratt power tool charging workbench. Extremely impressive, all in all -- we're starting to think that 2009 could be the year that wireless power could really take off. Gallery below, video after the break!

P.S.- We asked if Fulton had anything to do with the Palm Pre's sexy Touchstone wireless charger, but the guys in the booth didn't know. We'll let you know if we find anything out.

Gallery: Fulton Innovation Wireless Power

Continue reading Fulton Innovation has a wireless power coming out party at CES

Vuzix continue to expand their personal video wear lineup with the new Wrap 920AV. They’re semi-transparent (i.e. they act like conventional sunglasses) so you can wear them as you <strike>stumble</strike> walk around in the real world.

Vuzix are selling them as “Augmented reality” devices (they’re at least 5 years too soon for that to really work) but since they’re actually pretty comfortable to wear and have a very good picture I can see them being bought as straightforward personal video screens.

The new model that’s not on the website yet is the VR1440. An upgrade to the already popular VR920, it’s display is 800×600 native resolution and will take a PC resolution of up to 1600×1200. Combining 3D display and headtracking it would make a compelling accessory for flight simulator fans.
