Buffalo's Web Access hands-on: remote access from your iPhone

16 gigs ain't enough space for all those episodes of The Hills on your iPhone? Well, if you've got a Buffalo NAS such as the LinkStation Mini or Pro, you can now access all your files remotely on your OS X mobile device through an optimized web page straight from your device. The really nifty part is that you can stream MPEGs over 3G (and presumably EDGE, though we don't know why you'd want to) -- although it took around 60 seconds to buffer a TV show episode in the demo we got. The Buffalo rep we spoke with informed us that an actual app would be available in the App Store sometime this quarter, but if you're itching to catch up with LC and the gang, be sure to check out any one of the aforementioned devices that support the service and you could be streaming pronto.

Just in case you didn't think mapping was cool - Tele Atlas has their own Podcast.... They can tell you a little bit more about how data is gathered and how it can be used to get you an optimal route to your destination.

The redesigned TiVo Search does away with the Swivel Search and now makes show searching more efficient and HD friendly.

Just like Swivel Search TiVo Search will weed through both live TV and broadband content, like Amazon on Demand and Youtube, to find a complete list of available programs. But now upon searching for a show TiVo Search will automatically generate similar recommendations and display them with eye-pleasing art at the top of your TV. Another upgrade over the Swivel is the menu layout that is now three columns wide to make use of wide screen TVs and when available HD content is automatically recommended.

TiVo Search has be redesigned with that leaked TiVo UI we saw a few months ago, which brings a more evolved look to the friendly TiVo software. Right now this UI is only available while using Search which is currently in beta and available to all Series 3 and HD TiVos today.

If the leaked UI and the use of it in the new TiVo Search is any indication than it would seem this UI will probably be the future of TiVo, which I for one can't wait for.

Voice Recognition In The Home: Enter the Amulet Remote

How awesome is this. Words almost can’t describe it. Ever thought of using your iPhone, together with some old kids toys and some solid robotics know-how to create your very own beer-pouring machine? I know I haven’t. But this guy has.

It’s a beer pourer using ‘construx’ (spelling?) from my childhood, it’s kind of the mechanical platform On the iPhone here, we’re going to be using the accelerometers as input so as we turn the iPhone, it will pour the beer into my glass, and save me all of that tough work…

A very serious tip of the cap to the gentleman that created this wondrous device. I think I’ll get started on mine… I’ve already got the iPhone, and I think I have some ‘Lincoln Logs‘ around here somewhere… Hmmmm…

By the way, for any of the Canucks out there reading this. I’m pumped for the Canada vs. Sweden World Junior final tonight… GO CANADA! (I wish I had the ‘Serv O’Beer’ to help us pour beer while watching the game!)
