This season, Dutch luxury automaker Spyker expands its automotive aesthetic to apparel, accessories and fine art prints with the Spyker Collection. And what an aesthetic it is.

In 1898, coachbuilders Jacobus and Hendrik-Jan Spijker crafted their first car in Amsterdam, laying the foundation for Spyker, the Dutch car company that continues to make bespoke, high-performance super cars for select clientele. The latest Spyker creation, the C8 Aileron, was revealed at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year and debuted at the British Motor Show this summer.

"Designing a car, however, is more than creating a shape. It is creating a shape with the right proportions." That's the brand perspective according to Spyker—cars in which every part has a function. Spyker takes practical form beyond the utilitarian in breathtaking exotic sports cars with sinuous, sloping lines. Using lightweight aluminum and cues from jets, Spyker hand makes cars authentic to the individual customer. Owners even have their own webpage where they can chart the development of the car.

Spyker-branded gear may be a far cry from a Spyker itself but we can always get behind some ultimate fandom and we actually think the products hold their own. While the Spyker Chronoswiss Pilot Watch Double 12 Platinum is best-suited for the big spenders, priced at €38,675 ($49,495), more moderate admirers of the collection can settle for the €5 ($6) lanyard celebrating Spyker's brief Formula 1 presence. Fine apparel is a way to literally wear your love for the brand on your sleeve and with dashing sartorial cues from the sports car circuit, it's a style statement too. Purchasing Spyker gear requires registration on the Spyker Collection Webshop and all products are produced in limited editions.

I think the first glance at the Chronoswiss Wristmaster will probably result in you thinking that this is a parallel Nintendo Wii of sorts. Remember Wii jokes that involved two GameCubes being duct-taped together? Well, I guess the same can be said for the Chronoswiss Wristmaster. Hailed to be the first automatic board watch for the wrist, you get a double strap and double displays, with a chronograph on the right while a standard display is located on the left.

It might help to have arms like the hulk to wear this monstrosity. It’s yet another of those odd watches we love from Basel Fair. It’s not for the feint of heart and it’s not for puny men with spaghetti arms. It goes by the “Chronoswiss Wristmaster”. Look at the size of this thing. It master’s any wrist it attaches to. Putting it on must be like saddling a small horse.

It’s hailed as the First Automatic Board Watch for the Wrist, and features a double strap and display, consisting of a chronograph on the right and a standard display on the left. It measures a full 84mm x 42mm.

Chronoswiss Wristmaster - Or the Double-Wide (for you trailer park enthusiasts)

Another "monstr-oddity" from the Basel Fair - the Chronoswiss Wristmaster. Proclaimed as the First Automatic Board Watch for the Wrist, the straight jacket of a watch features a double strap and display. A chronograph (ETA 7750) on the right and a standard 2892-A2 on the left.

Measuring a whopping 84mm x 42mm, this baby ain't for the babysitter to calculate her hours spent with with your screaming kids.

Papillon by Andreas Strehler

Watchmaker Andreas Strehler is introducing the Papillon, his independent follow-up to last years Opus 7 for Harry Winston.

Strehler's representative Curtis Thomson of Tempered Online described it for me;

"It functions differently than the Opus 7. The 7's time was actuated via a button in the crown, with hours and minutes on one disc - an ingenious system. The Papillon has two separate discs - one for hours and one for minutes - with one disc on one barrel and the other disc on the barrel (two barrel watch). This is a first - mainspring barrels turn to slowly too indicate minutes and too quickly to indicate the hours. Andreas has figured out some crazy ass gearing system to allow the hour and minute discs to be fitted on the barrels and tell the time... and it can be set from the crown like a normal watch." The price is 140,000 CHF ($140,000)

Watching The Passage of Time

At this year's Basel World, Swiss watchmaker Andreas Strehler will be presenting his latest masterpiece, the Papillon, for the first time. This watch, with its unusual time display, is fascinating at first sight and it inspires not only timepiece connoisseurs.

The Creation

The unusual movement design was first employed in 2007. That was when renowned watch manufacturer, Harry Winston, asked Andreas Strehler if he would like to develop the legendary OPUS 7. Andreas Strehler, who had previously already collaborated with Chronoswiss, H.Moser&Cie and Maurice Lacroix, took up the challenge. He set himself the aim of designing a watch movement that would be captivating in its technical brilliance. But it still had to be easy to tell the time with it. At this stage he probably did not suppose that telling the time was actually to become a particular pleasure.

This concept is repeated in his latest work, the Papillon, but with Andreas Strehler's unmistakable signature and new technical refinements. The design and virtuoso technical sophistication of the watch movement puts everything that came before it into the shade, turning the watch into a coveted collector's item.

Mysterious Time Display

Spring barrels normally turn too slowly for the display of minutes and too fast for the hours. But in the Papillon the timing works differently. Its spring barrels are not firmly tied into the sequence of the movement. As a result the time display can be adjusted by means of the hand setting. In addition, two giant gear wheels with 192 and 175 teeth remove the need for a third wheel. This reduction in the number of wheels and the double spring barrel arrangement result in energy savings which extend the life of the watch enormously.

Fascinating Design

Along with the technical advantages, the unusual design is also astounding. The first thing you notice when looking at the movement is the shape of a butterfly, which seems to arise naturally from the arrangement of the bridges, hence too the watch’s name, Papillon.
Thanks to the special arrangement of the gear wheels, it has been possible to design the watch in an open way, offering the user the special experience of being able to watch the passage of time. The movement assumes the function of design. The consistently applied flowing forms endow the watch with elegance, and are reminiscent of the famous technical masterpieces of the Art Nouveau era.

Expressive Yet Quiet

Constructing a beautiful watch takes time. And it takes patience and endurance to achieve the longed-for perfection. Andreas Strehler combines these virtues most impressively. Anyone who can call a watch by Andreas Strehler his own also possesses the certainty of having discovered something special and unique. The exclusivity, the outstanding engineering and the deliberate understatement of the Papillon do not need to be shouted from the rooftops. The watch speaks for itself, emphasising the unconventional character of the wearer.

Made in Switzerland

Andreas Strehler is the owner of Uhrteil AG in Sirnach, where with a team of twelve experts, watchmakers, technicians and precision mechanics, he pursues his passion. The team not only develops and produces all the movements for the innovative mechanisms itself, but also the machines and computer software needed to make them. Andreas Strehler is convinced that opportunities in the field of "haute horlogerie" are still far from being exhausted. We will just have to wait and see what the visionary comes up with next.

The Car-laboration of Chronoswiss & Spyker

World’s first steampunk car/watch collaboration?

I suspect Chronoswiss and Spyker’s partnership has soured of late, as the only official sign of their brief dalliance during 2003/4 is buried in the gallery section of the Dutch carmaker’s website… However, as one of the more interesting (ie, less cynical) car/watch brand tie-ins, a proper tribute from the Watchismo Times has been long overdue – especially since Chronoswiss’s signature knurled onion crown forms such a key motif in Spyker’s Steampunk (yes, Steampunk interior design).

Check out how that lush leather cushioning combines with the metallic burred dashplates and exposed gear lever shaft. It could easily be mistaken for the cockpit of an HG Wells contraption, rather than a 500bhp V8 supercar that’ll hit 100kmh in under 4 seconds.

Spyker and Chronoswiss first joined forces in 2003. Cantankerous horolo-guru Gerd-Rudiger Lang, who celebrates the 25th anniversary of his watch brand this year, designed the ice-cool dashboard himself, as well as the Chronoswiss-Spyker ‘Double12’ 24-hour pilot’s watch, which paid tribute to (deep breath): Spyker’s aviation heritage (it merged with the Dutch Aircraft Factory in 1914 to make fighter planes); the C8 Double12 R car (top speed in excess of 199 mph, originally priced at a whopping €300,000); and the famous speed races which, in the past, were held in two 12-hour laps.

More gratuitous car porn: this time, the drool-inducing Spyker C12 Spyder, unveiled in Dec 2004. The first Spyker powered by the all-aluminium 6-litre W12 Audi engine, it had an all-platinum Double12 watch to go with it, only 48 of which were made, yours for €34,700 back then.

And while we’re at it, you may as well drool over this too: Zagato’s interpretation of the C12. Yes, it’s for real. Yes, I want one. No, I doubt very much that Chronoswiss will have the balls to do a watch version. Perhaps Urwerk or Hautlence fancy a try…?
