This year's CES is noticeably more subdued, smaller in scale, but... I don't care, I've just been waiting to hear what Palm was announcing. I've been using the Palm OS for so long, been through so many Treos and Centros that I refused to believe that there wasn't a cool smartphone left in Palm that would outsmart the iPhone. Maybe, just maybe, they've done it.

The Palm Pre. There's a big beautiful touchscreen, and a slider QWERTY keyboard. A brand new OS, the webOS. 3 megapixel camera with flash. There's a "gesture area" which eliminates buttons and lets you touch-scroll through apps and menus. EVDO-REV A (meaning this will be on Sprint, most likely, and on their fastest 3G network), and GPS (probably with Sprint Navigation, which is full turn-by-turn).

The OS keeps your contacts organized in a new way- all your texts, emails, calls, web searches (cyber stalking, anyone?) with someone is consolidated into one conversation.

Very exciting. This is probably THE product of CES 2009. Details still breaking, so updates will be coming with full release information, and pricing and availability.

Totally over the top and ridiculously expensive, Kodak's 7.6-inch OLED picture frame is still a serious want. The image was every bit as beautiful as we expected but surprised us with the frame's ability to playback HD video in such a fluid manner. The touch-controls along the bezel did what we wanted with little thought, albeit, with some lag. Not horrible but certainly annoying if we ever decide to hand Kodak $1,000 to take one home.

Gallery: Kodak OLED picture frame hands-on

Kodak OLED picture frame hands-on originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 08 Jan 2009 18:16:00 EST.
Design is one of the two pillars that Samsung has come to rely on (the other being technology). If you like their Red Touch line of LCD TVs from Samsung, you might love this Blu-Ray player concept, especially if you have a big one (the price to pay for early adoption, I guess). This is just beautiful and it’s not only the Blu-Ray player. They also designed the matching TV and speakers – nice!

In order to promote one of its best devices ever made, Nokia (NYSE: NOK) E71, the Finnish giant will be rolling out a new campaign in the coming days. And while we’ve no clue when campaign will actually start, we’ve found few screenshots from a dedicated website, where users will be able to learn more about the full QWERTY keyboard-equipped smartphone and how to use it to improve their lives.

Apparently, the dedicated website will feature 4 short films from artists with their interpretations. Guess, the idea is to show potential buyers of the E71 what that device can do for them.

I said it before and I’m repeating it again - it’s the best Nokia smartphone ever released to date (I’m not counting the upcoming N97, though). Buy it, you won’t regret!

And here are the screenshots from the mentioned 4 films.

By David Ponce

That headline pretty much sums up why I’m writing about this camera. Kodak’s Z980 is nice looking, but it is yet another one of those bulky pieces of kit meant to make you feel like you’re holding a DSLR, when this is really nothing of the sort. I won’t get into why this is the case, if you’re into photography, you should know. But the $400 Z980 does have one redeeming feature: 24X optical zoom. At that price point, it’s not half bad. And it’s 12MP, in case you want to know.

There’s a bunch of other features, and it looks like an ok camera. They’re all listed in the partial press release, which I’ve pasted, you guessed it, after the jump.

Oh yeah, it’s available “spring ‘09″.

Rochester, NY, January 8, 2009 — Eastman Kodak Company (NYSE:EK) today announced new additions to its digital camera line, led by the high-zoom KODAK Z980 Digital Camera, featuring outstanding control and Kodak’s innovative Smart Capture feature that consistently delivers high quality images.

Featuring a wealth of power and versatility, the KODAK Z980 Digital Camera offers a 26 mm wide angle, professional quality, 24X image stabilized optical zoom lens, a vertical shutter release and a hot shoe, all at an affordable price.

The Z980 enables serious photographers to easily handle both long-distance and wide-angle shots, and boasts Kodak’s innovative Smart Capture feature, which automatically adjusts the camera’s settings to deliver brilliant images automatically.

“The Z980 is an ideal camera for photographers looking to do more and get more from their digital camera,” said John Blake, General Manager Digital Capture and Devices, Vice President, Eastman Kodak Company. “The versatile lens, combined with our exclusive Smart Capture feature, lets consumers shoot great pictures in any setting — from daylight to night or from close-ups to landscapes, the camera makes adjustments automatically.”

This exquisitely designed work of art functions as an all-in-one multimedia device offering Internet access, a VoIP phone, video conferencing, gaming, music, video, FM radio, a built-in camera, and a set of slick widgets to keep you abreast of the latest news and weather.

All this and it even features USB and SD card ports, and a beautiful 7-inch color LCD touchscreen interface! Pricing and release date have yet to be announced. If you're one of the few who remember the shelved 3Com Ergo Audrey home utility breakthrough device from back in the year 2000, the WAVE-HOME presents a realistic look at the future of this category that many hoped for years ago.

Well, that didn't take long. Mere hours after we saw the ultra-lovely Sony VAIO P make its official debut here at CES, some industrious, sadistic folks have seen fit to tear it to shreds, exposing its guts for all to marvel (or tear up) over. We have to say, it's just as good looking on the inside as it is on the outside, but see for yourselves after the break, where there's a beautiful / horrifying gallery to stare at, and hit the read link for the full project.

Gallery: Sony Vaio P ripped apart

[Via jkkmobile]
Continue reading Sony VAIO P ripped apart

Sony VAIO P ripped apart originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 08 Jan 2009 00:36:00 EST. While Sony's OLED TV is little more than a beautiful, 11-inch novelty, LG is swaggering dangerously close to a respectable kitchen TV with this 15-inch AMOLED TV prototype. On display here at CES and planned for a production run sometime this summer, the image is absolutely stunning -- every bit as impressive as the Sony's XEL-1. Nothing else compares to the incredible contrast achieved by these OLED displays. Have a look in the gallery -- we've got the prototype pictured with and without its chubby TV bezel. It's credit-card thin (0.8-mm) and only on Engadget.

Gallery: Eyes on with LG's 15-inch OLED TV shipping this summer

Eyes on with LG's near-production 15-inch OLED TV: come on summer originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 07 Jan 2009 20:37:00 EST.

The keyboard? It rocks. The screen? Beautiful. The trackball is just the right amount of gritty, so your finger sticks to it and doesn't slide off onto the keyboard. The instant-on OS? Classy.

The keys are small, but just the perfect amount of small—you'll only have a problem if you have fingers the size of fried carnival pastries. It took me about 15-30 seconds of mistyping to adjust and type just about perfectly, though your hands won't feel as loose as they are on a full size keyboard by means. They're really punchy, though shallow, too. Overall, good. The trackball is a little oversensitive, but adjustable too. What I do hate are the mouse buttons. They're too small and not distinguished enough, so easy to miss. Oh, and it's a smudge magnet.

The form factor looks weird in the press shots, but in person, it works—incredibly well. It's very clearly a Porsche compared to the Chevy-esque standard netbook. In fact, Sony guys insist it's not a netbook, which is true. It's officially throw-it-in-your-bag-and-forget-it-sized, which netbooks are not.

I like the instant-on OS. It's essentially a Sony XMB that gives you access to photos, internet and movies, much like other instant-on OSes, but the P's seems exceptionally classy.

Every SKU has the same 1.33Ghz Atom inside (the Z series not the pokier N)—not incredibly speedy, and 2GB of RAM, which lets them all run Vista okay. Screen is, duh, gorgeous thanks to that incredible pixel density. The built-in 3G is Verizon only, and they wouldn't comment on a GSM version. Oh, and that $900 pricepoint? That's for Vista Home Basic—you've gotta drop a grand to get real Vista. Otherwise, the 4 different SKUs vary based mostly on storage—60GB starting up to a 128GB SSD in the $1500 model.

You'd almost think you could work on it, but we're not so convinced yet—that'll take some much more extensive hands on time, a couple days at least. At the very least, you'd have to widen and shrink your workflow. But we're definitely curious to find out. Overall, it's certainly an interesting machine—not a netbook, UMPC or laptop, but something in between all of those. What exactly that is, we'll have to figure out in the longer haul.
