High-quality mobile TV technology and comprehensive services from Nokia and Nokia Siemens Networks enable Switzerlands biggest service provider to expand its multimedia offering to the mobile world
...

High-quality mobile TV technology and comprehensive services from Nokia and Nokia Siemens Networks enable Switzerland’s biggest service provider to expand its multimedia offering to the mobile world

Swisscom has launched its mobile television service, Bluewin TV mobile, in Switzerland to become one of the first European providers to offer high-quality television experience to its mobile customers. Working together, Nokia and Nokia Siemens Networks enabled this service with their leading-edge mobile TV technology, services and expertise.

Bluewin TV mobile was launched on May 13 with quality comparable to that of the customers’ home TV. The service is made available through a network based on the Digital Video Broadcast for Handheld (DVB-H) standard and can be watched on DVB-H-enabled mobile devices. Swisscom provides its customers with a range of subscription plans and Nokia N77 devices.

For this project, Swisscom’s wholly-owned subsidiary, Swisscom Broadcast chose Nokia’s Mobile Broadcast Solution, while Nokia Siemens Networks integrated the mobile television platform with Swisscom’s systems and provided a broad range of services, including project management, network and architecture planning, security and implementation.

“With the time constraints of the project, it was essential for Swisscom Broadcast to rely on one partner offering a solution based on open standards which can guarantee the end-to-end interoperability of the whole solution, from the DVB-H back-end system to the mobile devices” says Olivier Anthamatten, Head of Strategic Projects at Swisscom Broadcast.

With Bluewin TV mobile, featuring high-definition picture quality and excellent sound, the viewers have a choice of 20 channels, including SF1, TSR1 and Eurosport. An electronic program guide and an easy navigation key allow people on the move to always stay on top of the news.

Swisscom is one of the first DVB-H service providers in Europe and worldwide. Bluewin TV mobile marks a further step in the Group's multimedia strategy and offers customers on the move the same viewing experience as with their TV at home.

Swisscom’s DVB-H broadcasts reach some 44 percent of the Swiss population, mostly in the area of Basel, Berne, Geneva, Zurich and Lausanne. Customers outside the DVB-H coverage area or without DVB-H handsets can receive Bluewin TV mobile on the Vodafone live! portal using UMTS/EDGE, which covers 99.8 percent of the population.

The solutions offered by Nokia and Nokia Siemens Networks are based on the open DVB-H standard. They allow short implementation time as well as end-to-end capability, combining the equipment, services and devices to create a unique solution for mobile TV service providers, covering both mobile TV broadcast and 3G streaming (unicast).
Nokia and Nokia Siemens Networks work with more than 30 operators worldwide on DVB-H implementations. Commercial launches include Finland, India, Malaysia, Philippines, Vietnam and most recently Indonesia. The European Union has selected DVB-H as the definitive technology for digital and mobile broadcasting.

About Swisscom Broadcast
Swisscom Broadcast is the leading provider in Switzerland of broadcasting and cross-platform services for customers in the media sector and for wireless communications for rescue and security organizations. Swisscom Broadcast operates a leading edge network infrastructure for radio and TV broadcasting including mobile TV, using digital video and audio technologies (DVB-T, DVB-H and DAB). As a forward-looking company, Swisscom Broadcast is also developing audiovisual transmission services using IP, Ethernet and optical technology. Swisscom is one of the major players supporting UEFA Media Technologies in order to transmit TV pictures right into the fans’ living rooms. The UEFA EURO 2008™ will transfer all television signals to Swisscom Broadcast from the football stadiums in high definition or standard digital quality. These uncompressed signals will then be transferred to the UEFA’s International Broadcast Center (IBC) in Vienna.

About Nokia
Nokia is the world leader in mobility, driving the transformation and growth of the converging Internet and communications industries. We make a wide range of mobile devices with services and software that enable people to experience music, navigation, video, television, imaging, games, business mobility and more. Developing and growing our offering of consumer Internet services, as well as our enterprise solutions and software, is a key area of focus. We also provide equipment, solutions and services for communications networks through Nokia Siemens Networks.
www.nokia.com

About Nokia Siemens Networks
Nokia Siemens Networks is a leading global enabler of communications services. It might help to have arms like the hulk to wear this monstrosity. It’s yet another of those odd watches we love from Basel Fair. It’s not for the feint of heart and it’s not for puny men with spaghetti arms. It goes by the “Chronoswiss Wristmaster”. Look at the size of this thing. It master’s any wrist it attaches to. Putting it on must be like saddling a small horse.

It’s hailed as the First Automatic Board Watch for the Wrist, and features a double strap and display, consisting of a chronograph on the right and a standard display on the left. It measures a full 84mm x 42mm.

Romain Jerome has some cheek. They’ve released some renderings of a line of watches, called TITANIC-DNA, that are actually made from pieces of the Titanic. Here’s the rub: you can’t wear them. If they’re exposed to air they’ll begin to rust and fall apart. The only way to own one is to keep it in an argon-filled cylinder. No pricing and there’s no definitive proof they’ll ever make this thing, but as we know: the rich are insane and will buy anything. Look for more Basel 2008 coverage coming as soon as I sift through all the info I have.

A new service is to be added to Swisscom's mobile TV menu - Bluewin TV mobile will available on the new DVB-H network that is being rolled out, giving a quality that is claimed to be as good as home...

A new service is to be added to Swisscom's mobile TV menu - Bluewin TV mobile will available on the new DVB-H network that is being rolled out, giving a quality that is claimed to be as good as home TV sets, with customer having access to 20 channels!

Swisscom already has a pedigree in mobile multimedia apps with their "100 second news broadcast", Napster Mobile, and the Vodafone live! portal.

DVB-H coverage in Switzerland apparently reaches 44% of the population right now, and customers in Basel, Berne, Geneva, Zurich, and Lausanne will be able to get UEFA 2008 coverage - wow, all my favourite Swiss cites, AND, my favourite football competition - I'm moving!

Bluewin TV Mobile will be on offer from 13th May, and Nokia N77 handsets will be the device customers needs to ask for.

This is the reason why I have had the same cheap Casio Illuminator strapped to my wrist for the last five years: its features — miraculous feats of digital programming and horological ingenuity, all of them — include beeping and letting me see what time it is in the dark. But jeebus. This Opus 8 Mechanical Digital from Harry Winston Rare Timepieces just has me swooning.

It's based upon the maverick design of Frédéric Garinaud, a French engineer with no experience in watchmaking who, in 2007, arrived in Basel to showcase a way in which LED-style digits could "raise" out of the surface of a purely mechanical clock. The Opus 8 takes this concept and runs with it: pull a lever on the side and the hour erects itself from the watch face as numerous dials rapidly spin to land on the correct hour and minute.

But what I really love about this watch is how it channels the form of an old mahogany transistor radio. It's got something of a Dick Tracy Radio Watch vibe to it, without the actual radio. I would buy one of these in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, it's a limited edition of fifty, and they're already sold out to fat cat millionaires and the loathsome, stinking like.

I’m off to the Milan Design Week tomorrow morning. As always it will be nice to come to Milan and meet the spring (I’m from Sweden you know…). What interests me most is to see if the DesignArt, or Vulgarism trend as I prefer to call it, from lasts years Milan Design Week is as strong this year. The invitation cards shows that designers like Studio Job and Jaime Hayon (who is responsible for the creation above) is well represented at different shows at town. Also the presence of Meta, the contemporary arm of Mallet, the London and New York antique house shows that Milan follows the trend from Art Basel Miami Beach.

I will let you know in a couple of posts from the Milan Design Week in the next couple of days.

Arrivederci!
