The police have been trying to get drivers to drive at the correct speed ever since the motor car was invented, the yellow speed cameras only make us slow down just before we drive past their radar glare, then speed up straight after - rendering the effect pointless and more dangerous that it would have been without them. On motorways they have started to place cardboard cut out police cars to fool drivers into driving below the speed limit, but as a regular to a spot of road the effect is soon wasted once you have driven past the cut out once.
Now drivers in Philadelphia US are going to get the first look at the new police project 3D speed bumps!, sounds crazy but they are using 3D technology to create realistic looking speed bumps, causing oncoming drivers to slow down, thinking that they would be damaging the bottom of their car by hitting the fake bumps at speed.
A plastic material will be laid down on the ground that gives the illusion that there is a hump in the road, the creators of the project are aiming at changing the mindset of the driver, making them realise that the speed limit is not a recommended speed but an actual limit.
Personally I think drivers will catch on pretty quickly, but hey it’s worth a try.
