Brazil’s newest mobile operator Unicel plans to launch commercial services in Sao Paulo metropolitan area on September 7th, under the brand name Aeiou.

Brazil flagUnicel acquired a GSM licence in October of last year for BRL 93.8 million ($60 million), and is now looking to attract 500,000 subscribers in its first year of operations.

So far the company has invested BRL 250 million in rolling out its network, and they plan to start with a pre-paid only service in the state capital as well as in Guarulhos, Osasco, Santo Andre, So Bernardo, Sao Caetano and Diadema.

However, it’s important to note Unicel faces a tough competition in the Sao Paulo metropolitan market, which is already served by the likes of Vivo, Claro and TIM Brasil.

Unicel will charge BRL 0.14 per minute (on-net), BRL 0.28 a minute to fixed lines and BRL 0.63 per minute to other mobile numbers.
